Abstract:
This data contains the flight lines that correspond with the Insect and Disease survey for 2001. The flight lines come from two sources, either hand drawn on the base maps in flight and then "heads up" digitized using USGS digital topographic maps as background or collected as GPS waypoints in flight and then brought into arcview as a coverage. The two types of information were appended in arcview as one layer, edge-matched.
Purpose:
This data was created to identify the actual flight line for the corresponding Insect and Disease aerial survey information. An estimate of area surveyed cooresponds to a two mile buffer from flight line
Supplemental_Information:
Procedures_Used: Most flight lines were collected via GPS. Only a few local survey flights or minor gaps in the GPS log were digitized in ArcView. GPS flight lines were collected daily. These daily files and the "heads up" digitized lines were unioned together in Arc/View and attributes added. Any corrections to the flight lines were made at this time. The A/V shapefiles were converted to A/I using the Arc command SHAPEARC. Fuzzy tolerance for all zone files were checked and adjusted to .05 if needed. All zones were reprojected into ALBERS. Coverage was built after ensuring fuzzy tolerance was set to .05. Flightline were buffered using the Arc command BUFFER infile outfile # # 3218 .05 LINE ROUND FULL. This coverage was not clipped for large bodies of water.

Process_Description:
Surveys were conducted by USFS FHP personnel and ADNR entomologist using Geo-Link software to capture flight line information from a GPS log. The flight lines for local surveys out of Anchorage Alaska are recorded at the time of capture on 1:250,000 scale USGS topographic-bathymetric series maps. Flight lines on the base maps are digitized into Arc/View using USGS 1:250,000 DRG's of the topographic-bathymetric series maps as background. The flight lines for interior and southeast Alaska are recorded at the time of capture into a Global Positioning System database. All files were Appended in ArcView. Shapefiles were converted to Arc and finalized in Arc/Edit to eliminate dangling nodes, excess nodes, and generalized to eliminate size without drastically changing lines to create one complete database. A buffer of 2 miles each side of the flight line was added to represent line of sight. As a QC check, frequencies were run for miles of flight line and acres of buffered flight line.
